Is work still dignified?
Pursuing identity integration in a world of career fragmentation
"A thought-provoking essay from my recent pod guest on a relevant question right now: Is work still dignified?
With robotics and AI raising existential angst about job security, (even conservatives calling for UBI-of-sorts), and the ongoing debate about 'fake jobs' (a critique I'm not entirely convinced by, though I understand the argument), this seems a good time to revisit this.
Kurtz more or less argues that maybe we stop defining ourselves by our megacorp employer. But that doesn't mean it's all bleak. We can (and should) ground our identity in older things; our craft, families, local communities, and so on.
FWIW, I attempted a while back to give my own perspective on this too (check out 'Hail, Caesar!, Tally Ho Yacht Guy, & the Dignity of Work').
Worth your time.
Andy

Editor’s note: if you’re considering getting copies of Leaving a Legacy for Christmas gifts, I’d suggest ordering now. Amazon’s printing services often experience delays at this time of year. I remain deeply grateful for the exceptionally positive response the book has received - thank you.
