Many wish to develop a reading habit. Once established, reading becomes a pleasurable and effortless daily ritual. This is easier to do if you start small.

Below I have suggested five works, which grow from (very) short stories into short novels. This progression allows you to get some titles under your belt, to get used to picking up another book shortly after finishing the last, and to get a sense for what you enjoy.

I’ve selected five of the greatest authors of the 20th century, so you can also proudly announce that you have read their works.

I will say that these works accord to my taste. This is a fairly intense selection, and something of an emotional assault. But it’s not a bad thing to be introduced to the intensity of experience that reading can bring.

I loosely suggest reading them in order. They gradually add complexity, subtlety, and length. Please enjoy.
